Calving 2011

Devon’s are very discrete in the signs which they show before birth and each cow has different tendencies. Over the years we have learned the different behaviors of the older cows and can read them better, however the mature cows tend to not need assistance. Of the most notable of our cows Dairymaid starts “singing” about a week before calving. A quiet, low and quite melodious mooing as shes lying by herself in the barn.

The first time calving heifers are the ones which keep us guessing and these are where problems are most likely to occur. Over time we have found that the best thing to do is the continual periodical checking of them. Trying to guess just results in problems!!
